Bob Woodward disclosed that the White House threatened him for his recent articles that have been critical of White House policy.
This was not a surprise to me as it has been my understanding that this has been the default policy under the Valerie Jarrett White House since the beginning. It is a bit surprising that they would threaten someone of Woodward’s stature, however. I have been told that the mood within the White House since Obama’s re-election has been one of untouchable confidence. There is zero concern about Benghazi, Fast and Furious or any other scandal or policy issue because almost half of the electorate has drank the kool-aid and because they have cover from 99% of all media outlets.
However, when you threaten reporters (sometimes the LIVES of reporters with less stature than Woodward), you certainly don’t endear yourselves to them. When Woodward informed the world yesterday about the threat, I wondered if it would give other reporters the courage to come forward with similar tales.
For at least one so far, it did. Former Clinton aide-turned-reporter Lanny Davis came forward.
Davis told WMAL that his editor, John Solomon, “received a phone call from a senior Obama White House official who didn’t like some of my columns, even though I’m a supporter of Obama. I couldn’t imagine why this call was made.” Davis says the Obama aide told Solomon, “that if he continued to run my columns, he would lose, or his reporters would lose their White House credentials.”
Hopefully, more reporters come forward. Of course, this is a very different Administration than any we’ve ever seen. This is an Administration that will spend it’s last four years in non-stop campaign mode thanks to hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign money funneled into a special PAC. Every single issue, every single showdown with Republicans will be accompanied by an advertising blitz on the radio, tv and web (The White House has tremendous influence over left wing news sites and blogs). The campaign to discredit Woodward is already beginning and the same will happen with Davis.
The bottom line in all this is that this behavior is another example of how this administration is different (in the worst way) from anything ever seen in American politics. As I told a good friend before the last election “He is not a Democrat. This is not a criticism of Democratic values.” Unfortunately, the party has followed our President’s lead.
What does it tell you when if a reporter doesn’t give flattering coverage to an Administration, said Administration cuts off his/her access? We have State Run Media in this country now and this Woodward issue is the tiny tip of the iceberg.
I can only hope it’s not all we’ll see.
